BABANRAO DHAKANE son of Dadaba Narayan Dhakane, born on November 10, 1937 in Akola, Taluka: Pathardi, District: Ahmednagar of Maharashtra State. He completed his education at Shri Trilok Jain Vidalaya, Pathardi, District: Ahmednagar. He married to Suman on May 25, 1957. He had two sons; of which elder son passed away due to heart attack in 2005 and the younger one, Pratap Dhakane is active in Politics. His daughter in law is the Member of Ahmednagar Zilla Parishad.

He was the first person of Vanjari Community who was the member of the IX Lok Sabha of India. He represented the Beed Constituency of Maharashtra as a member of the Janata Dal. He served as the Union State Minister for Energy Resources in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar. He had also held various positions in the Government of Maharashtra for several times. Babanrao Dhakane also participated in the Goa Liberation Movement. As of now he has retired from Public life and currently resides in Pune, Maharashtra. He is considered as a prominent leader of the Vanjari Community of Maharashtra
